Typefaces by Birks

Birkz

The Birkz typefaces. These days, lots of designers seem to be producing their own typefaces based on their own handwriting. Birks is no exception.

The reason behind the Birkz typefaces is because in this corporate design world, Birks wanted to give his cartoons that ora of consistancy. Henceforth all the titles for Birks Brand Cartoons are now easily done using these two typefaces. This saves lots of time, rather than draw every title, scan it in, etc.

The Birkz typeface is used throughout many Birks projects, including PaulPaul.co.uk and CrispyCarrots.com

Can

This project was originally produced during the HND at Suffolk College that Birks did. Every letter is fashioned out of a ring pull from a can of fizzy pop, henceforth the name 'Can'. The original version was quite technically poor, each letter was just a photocopy of the ring pull with bits cut off. Plus it didn't help with all the letters falling off due to poor spray mount.

Since then Birks has joined the population of computer users, and has revisited the typeface, to present it how it was supposed to be. Using Photoshop 4, Can now looks much better.

And after all that, Birks found out that it's already been done.
